Panarea is the smallest of the Aeolian Islands, a jewel of the Tyrrhenian Sea that, over the years, has become a favorite destination for visitors of all ages. Everyone comes to Panarea looking for something, whether it’s a lively evening, a barefoot stroll along the pathways, a relaxing afternoon in front of enchanting views, or a boat trip in search of pristine coves. HIKING TRAILS IN PANAREA
The island of Panarea stands between the extreme Stromboli and the islands closer to the mainland like Vulcano, Lipari and Salina. Despite being among the lowest of the Aeolian Islands, it offers several routes for hiking enthusiasts, nature lovers, and those who enjoy walking. Therefore, hiking definitely belongs on your “what to see and do in Panarea” list!
The highest point of the island is Punta Corvo, which rises to 421 meters above sea level. There are 3 marked trails to reach the top, each winding through traces of ancient settlements, lush Mediterranean vegetation, rural paths, cisterns, and old mule tracks.
The first trail starts from the center of the island (from the San Pietro district), while the other two start from the extremities (from Calcara, the northernmost point, and from Punta Milazzese, the southernmost point).
The easiest trail is definitely the one that begins in the San Pietro district, in the center of the village (trail marker number 1 – see photo). From the port, you climb up through the houses toward the Cemetery and beyond. There, the road turns into a mule track, and silence begins to envelop everything. If you continue always in the direction of “Punta Corvo,” you’ll first reach a stretch of paved lava stone road (very characteristic) and then a series of cypress trees, indicating an old cemetery. Admire the timeless views and continue climbing up the Cardosi municipal road. You’ll find an alternation of steep sections and almost flat stretches until you reach the ridge. The panorama is breathtaking. At the summit, you can then choose whether to continue towards Punta Milazzese or in the opposite direction, towards Calcara and then Ditella. This trail should definitely be included in what to see in Panarea.
You can choose the path that best satisfies your curiosity, although the recommendation is to explore them all since every point of Panarea deserves to be seen.
